Man Charged in Shooting of Boy, 10, in Wilmington

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP/WBOC) - Wilmington Police say a 10-year-old boy was shot in the head while inside his home. A man has been charged in the incident.

Officers say the boy was shot about 1:50 a.m. Tuesday in a row house in the 700 block of Townsend Place in a Wilmington Housing Authority complex off South Heald Street known as the Southbridge projects. Authorities say the boy is in critical but stable condition at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. Mayor Dennis Williams visited the child's family at the hospital on Tuesday.

On Tuesday afternoon, police arrested 24-year-old Jaleel Goldsborough and charged him with possession of a firearm by a person prohibited causing injury or death to another person in connection with the shooting. Police did not disclose what past offense led to Goldsborough being banned from having guns, any details of how the shooting occurred or why they said nothing of the circumstances of the shooting for more than 14 hours afterward.

Authorities released few details about the shooting. A police spokesman says detectives are getting a lot of conflicting information.

Police Chief Bobby Cummings pleaded for community members to come forward with information about the shooting.
