SALISBURY, Md. – The city of Salisbury on Wednesday began construction on phase one of its long-awaited skate park. Mayor Jim Ireton, along with members of the city council and the city's skate park committee, were on hand for the official groundbreaking ceremony at South Park Drive.

The first phase of the skate park is a roughly $280,000 project that’s been something many people, including Committee President Bobby Shaller, have wanted to see happen for nearly 9 years.

“This is a dream come true,” Shaller said. “Kids have access to a skate park now. They don’t have to skate in the streets…they’ll have a free, safe place to do it.”

Although the city is still working on getting the money in place via grants and donations, a second phase is in the works, which will add several pieces to the park. The estimated cost of phase two is roughly $400,000.

Construction on phase one is expected to be complete by late November or early December.
