SMYRNA, Del. – Smyrna police say an in-home caretaker has been arrested for stealing $50,000 from her elderly patient.

According to the police department, a 17-month investigation had ended in the arrest of 51-year-old Dawn Cirillo, of Frederica.

Police said the department was first contacted in March of 2014 regarding suspicious activity on the 84-year-old victim’s checking accounts, credit cards and money market accounts. Detectives said they determined that Cirillo had begun forging checks from the victim’s accounts and using the victim’s credit cards when she was hired as the person’s in-home caretaker in August of 2012. Police said that between then and July 2015, Cirillo stole $50,003 from the victim.

Police said Cirillo voluntarily turned herself in once she was contacted the police and was arrested on multiple counts of theft, forgery and unlawful use of a credit card. She was arraigned in the Justice of the Peace Court 7 and released on $128,000 unsecured bond pending a future court appearance.
