Police: Smyrna Woman Reportedly Jumps From Truck to Her Death

Posted:

SMYRNA, Del. – Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that happened Thursday morning near Smyrna.

Troopers say at around 1:05 a.m. Michael Whitley, 46, of Smyrna was driving southbound on Route 13 in a box truck about to make a left turn south of Holly Hill Drive when his 43-year-old wife Evelyn Whitley reportedly jumped from the passenger’s side door. Police say she fell and was hit by the truck’s back wheels before her husband could stop. Evelyn was pronounced dead at the scene.

DSP’s Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating the fatal crash, including the reason for Evelyn getting out of the vehicle.

The southbound lanes of Route 13 were closed for about four hours early Thursday morning while the crash was cleared.
