GREENBELT, Md. (AP) - A lawyer who prosecutors say continued to operate a debt settlement scam after he lost his license to practice has been sentenced to 3 ½ years in prison.
Forty-three-year-old Richard A. Brennan of Clarksburg was also ordered to pay $2.9 million in restitution to the victims of the fraud at sentencing Thursday in federal court in Greenbelt.
According to his plea agreement, Brennan started a business to provide debt settlement services to consumers. Prosecutors say customers received little help with resolving their debt issues and Brennan refused to give refunds.
In January 2009, Brennan surrendered his license to practice law. Prosecutors say continued to attempt to defraud clients by operating under different business names.
