Motorcycle Crash Near Lewes Injures Two, One Critically

LEWES, Del.– Delaware State Police are investigating a serious motorcycle crash near Lewes that left two people injured Thursday afternoon.

Troopers said that at around 2:25 p.m., 25-year-old Brian Taylor, of Lewes was heading northbound on Dairy Farm Road on a motorcycle when a dump truck pulled out in front of him about a half mile south of Route 9. Police said the truck, driven by 54-year-old Jonathan Hurd, of Georgetown, was coming from a private access road leading to a cornfield.

Police said the motorcycle struck the back of the truck, causing Taylor and his passenger, Kristen Schaffer, 26, of Lewes, to be thrown onto the road. Police say neither of them was wearing a helmet.

Taylor was transported to Beebe Healthcare with undetermined injuries, according to police. Schaffer was airlifted to Christiana Medical Center in critical condition.

Police said Hurd was uninjured in the crash.

Troopers said they are continuing their investigation into this incident and no charges have been filed.

Dairy Farm Road was closed for about two hours Thursday while the crash was cleared.
