BERLIN, Md.-  School is back in session in Worcester County, which is the only public school system in Maryland that allows students to start school after Labor Day.

Early morning fog pushed school back one hour Tuesday morning, but that did not keep students like Quiasia Thomas of Berlin from getting ready for school very early.

"I'm so excited. I'm just ready to come," said Thomas, a sixth-grader at Berlin Intermediate School. Her mother was just as happy.

The Worcester County Public School System is the only school system in the state that allows students to start class after Labor Day. State officials are trying to make that the case for all Maryland public schools.

Maryland Senator Jim Mathias (D-Dist.38) introduced legislation during the 2015 legislative session that never made it out of committee. Mathias recently told WBOC that he and others plan to introduce another bill during the 2016 Maryland General Assembly.

Haley Blizzard, a mother of three, said she is grateful for the extra time she has been able to spend with her girls. She thinks all students should go back to school after Labor Day.

"I think it's great because they're in school most of the day, and I'm at work," Blizzard said. "By the time I get home from work it's bedtime,so that little bit of extra quality time is definitely awesome."

The Ocean City Police Department, and other local law enforcement agencies, have been reminding people about the importance of stopping for buses when flashing red lights appear. Police also urge extra caution at intersections.

Failure to stop for a bus could result in a $570 fine and three-point penalty on a driver's license.

Parents are also reminded to have their kids stay out of the street while waiting for the bus.
