Wilmington Clinic Ceasing Surgical Abortions

Posted:

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP)- Delaware health officials say a Wilmington clinic will no longer perform surgical abortions.

The change comes after state officials threatened to close Premier OB/GYN if it did not get national accreditation.

The Delaware Division of Public Health said the clinic had been providing surgical abortions since September 2014. Officials say they have urged the facility to get independent accreditation, a requirement of state law. The clinic faced a Tuesday deadline for obtaining that accreditation.

The clinic had argued that it didn't start operating until January, and that the state is confusing it with a previous clinic at the same site. On Friday, Premier OB/GYN said in a letter that it is ceasing surgical abortions, but it will still offer non-surgical abortions by prescribing medication.
