Elderly Bicyclist Hit by Truck, Driver Cited

Posted: Updated:

EASTON, Md.- Easton police say an elderly man riding his bicycle on Easton Parkway on Tuesday was injured when he was hit by another vehicle.

It happened just before 11:30 a.m. on Easton Parkway just south of Port Street. Police say 76-year-old Michael Sheedy, of Easton, was riding his bike along the shoulder of Easton Parkway when a 2013 Ford F150, driven by 80-year-old James Lempke, attempted to pass Sheedy.

Police say while passing, Lempke's truck crossed the white line into the shoulder, hitting Sheedy with the passenger-side mirror of the truck. Police say this caused Sheedy to fall over.

Police say Sheedy was wearing a helmet at the time, but he was still flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma for treatment and evaluation for abrasions and a possible head injury. Lempke was reportedly not injured. Police said Sheedy was later discharged from the hospital and permitted to go home.

Police said Lempke was found to be at fault and received a traffic citation for "failure to yield right of way."

Easton Parkway in that area was reduced to a single lane for about 30 to 45 minutes while the crash was investigated.
