Man Cited with DUI After Crash in Milton

MILTON, Del.– Troopers arrested a man for DUI after he crashed his vehicle into two trees before it caught on fire.

Police say the crash happened around 5 a.m. Sunday morning.

According to police, 25-year-old Michael Fitzpatrick of Cape May Court House, New Jersey, was driving a 2007 Ford F150 pickup truck northbound on Union Street Extended (SR5) approaching Coastal Highway (SR1).

Police say the truck crossed both the southbound and northbound lanes of Route 1 and entered a property located at Brumbley Place, where it initially struck two tree stumps before hitting a large tree.  The truck came to a stop and caught fire, catching the tree on fire, as well as causing heat damage to the occupied residence on the property.

When a trooper arrived on scene, Fitzpatrick was unconscious inside the burning truck. Police say the trooper then broke out the driver's side window and was able to wake the driver and pull him from the burning truck.

Fitzpatrick was removed from the scene by EMS and transported to Bayhealth Milford Memorial where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.  He was cited for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol.

Milton Fire Department responded to the scene to extinguish the fire.  There were no injuries to the occupants of the house and no structural damage to the residence.
