LAUREL, Del. – A New Castle County man is behind bars after Laurel police say he got in a fight with officers who allegedly found drugs and a loaded gun in his vehicle during a traffic stop.

Police said officers pulled the vehicle over Saturday upon learning the registered owner had active felony warrants for his arrest out of New Castle County for weapons and assault charges.

Officers said they made contact with the driver, Michael Allen, 27, of Newark, Del., who was also the vehicle’s registered owner. Police said they smelled marijuana inside the vehicle and asked Allen to get out. That is when Allen began to fight with the officers and resisted arrest until they used a Taser on him, according to police. Both officers reportedly received minor injuries.

Police said a search of the vehicle turned up a small amount of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and a fully-loaded small revolver, which matched the description of the weapon noted in the active warrants out of New Castle County.

Allen was charged with possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, resisting arrest with force against a police officer, hindering prosecution, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and being a fugitive. He was ordered held in the Sussex Correctional Institution in Georgetown in default of a $50,000 cash bond.
