Ohio Man Cited With DUI After Car Fire in Kent County

SMYRNA, Del. – Troopers have arrested an Ohio man for DUI after they say his car caught fire in the median of Route 1 in Kent County.

According to Delaware State Police, the incident happened just before 6 p.m. Wednesday as 21-year-old Christopher Nagel, of Grafton, Ohio, was driving northbound on Route 1 just south of exit 114.

Troopers say for unknown reasons the car caught fire while moving, entered the center median and stopped. A responding trooper and other witnesses then watched as the car continued moving, though the driver appeared unresponsive with his foot on the accelerator.

Police say the group of bystanders took a shovel from the trooper’s patrol car and smashed the car’s front passenger windshield in order to get the driver out. That’s when troopers say the driver became alert and tried to put the vehicle in reverse. He eventually stopped the car and exited, as per the trooper’s instructions, but police say he became evasive while being taken into custody and several witnesses had to help hold him down.

Nagel was taken to Troop 9 in Odessa and cited for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, Reckless Endangerment, Resisting Arrest, Criminal Mischief, Failure to Have Insurance, and Driving an Unsafe Motor Vehicle, according to police. He was arraigned at JP7 and released on $6,025 unsecured bond.

The Smyrna Fire Department responded to the scene to extinguish the fire.
