WESTOVER, Md.- The Somerset County Sheriff's Office is using a new digital tool to make identification cards for children. Deputies will use the new system on Sunday for the first time.

The Sheriff's Office recently purchased an EZ Child Identification System that is stored on a laptop inside a metal-like briefcase. A small camera and printer are linked to it. These are all the tools needed to record and print critical information, according to Sheriff Ronnie Howard.

"God forbid a child were to ever go missing, this would have all the necessary information for the law enforcement agency," Howard said.

The sheriff said he recently acquired $5,000 in local grant money to cover the cost of the system that will be used for the first time on Sunday. Between 11 a.m and 2 p.m., deputies will make identification cards and CDs for children at the Moose Lodge on Old Princess Anne Road in Westover. It will be part of a Lunch with Santa event at the facility. All are welcome.

The process only takes about 20 minutes to complete.

First, a deputy will input a child's name, height, weight, hair and eye color, nicknames and visible scars into the system.

Then, the child will need to rub their fingerprints in a cream that raises their ridges. Each fingerprint is then scanned, using a small lightweight device, onto the computer. Then, using a small camera, the child's picture will be taken. An audio recording is optional.

Once the process is complete, the data is printed on a sheet of paper and CD for their parents before the information is deleted on the laptop.

The office purchased 250 CDs that will be used at this weekends event.

Deputies will make more ID cards at the Moose Lodge on Oct. 25 and Oct.31.
