SOMERSET COUNTY, Md. - Maryland Department of Natural Resources Police tell WBOC that numerous suspicious brush fires, set within the month of September, are under investigation in Somerset County.

The most recent of the fires was in the woods just off of Lovers Lane in Marion Station on Wednesday.  Firefighters were forced to extinguish those flames before the situation escalated.  However, that fire was not the only fire of the past week.  Charles Kenney of Marion Station says he needed to call for help on Tuesday when the situation got hot just down the street from his home.

"There was smoke. I said 'Man, that's close and I ain't burning no trash.' So what I did, I came back here on my bike and I looked around, and there was fire and so I called 911," Kenney said.

A spokesperson for Maryland DNR Police tells WBOC that there have been "numerous" brush fires set in Somerset County this month with a majority of them happening just outside of Crisfield.  Police would not give an exact number of fires that have been set since September 1st.  The DNR police spokesperson added that investigators are gathering evidence at each fire scene.  Right now, the fires are not being described as arson, but arson has not been ruled out in the investigation.

Kenney believes someone is setting the fires in Somerset County and hopes that whoever it is is caught before things become dangerous for fire fighters and homeowners.

"It makes me a little uncomfortable. I stay right down the street about 1,000 feet from this fire, where it occurred. And it's kind of uncomfortable thinking that somebody would try and burn any area," said Kenney.

Details remain limited into the investigation and while police search for whatever or whoever is sparking these fires, neighbors in Somerset County are only concerned with when these fires are going to be extinguished for good.
