FENWICK ISLAND, Del.- In a 5-2 vote the Fenwick Island Town Council this week approved the first reading of an ordinance permitting the Sands Motel to be replaced with a larger one.

The owner of the motel, Spiro Buas, plans for the new version to have 65 rooms, doubling its size and density. The owner said the size increase is necessary to compete with other motels in the area.

Local residents said while they understand the need for improvement to the Sands Motel, they are concerned the significant change would affect the community adversely. Residents say Fenwick Island is known as a "Quiet Community" and they would like to keep it that way.

The next public hearing regarding the proposed ordinance change is scheduled for Oct. 23.
