UPDATE: Driver and Vehicle Involved in Fatal Hit-and-Run Located

Posted:

FARMINGTON, Del.- Delaware State Police have located the driver and vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and-run pedestrian crash Wednesday night.

At 10:25 p.m., troopers said 37-year-old Rodrick Irving, of California, was driving a tractor trailer northbound in the right lane on Route 13, just north of Main Street.

For unknown reasons, state police said 36-year-old Jay Grove III, of Harrington, was in the northbound right lane of Route 13 when he was hit by the tractor trailer.

Troopers said the tractor trailer left the scene without stopping. State police said Harrington police located the vehicle Thursday afternoon in the Best Ace Hardware parking lot on Midway Drive in Harrington.

According to troopers, police interviewed Irving and a male passenger in the truck. State police said the two men said they thought the vehicle hit a deer, and continued on.

Troopers said the front bumper of the tractor trailer was damaged.

State police said a motorcyclist riding northbound on Route 13 called 9-1-1 after he hit what he thought was a deer in the road. Troopers said the rider was not injured in the collision.

Troopers said Jay Grove III, who was wearing dark clothing, was pronounced dead at the scene.

State police said Route 13 in the area of the crash was closed for more than 6 hours as the scene was investigated and cleared.

Troopers said the crash is under investigation. They said it is possible other vehicles may have hit the pedestrian on Route 13.
