Ex-Virginia Governor Says He's Still Pursuing Slavery Museum

Posted:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP)- Former Gov. L. Douglas Wilder says he is continuing to pursue plans for a national slavery museum in Richmond.

Wilder says he is discussing the proposed U.S. National Slavery Museum with Virginia Commonwealth University.

Wilder announced last year that he wanted to establish the museum in the former First African Baptist Church. The university owns the church and uses it as space for the medical school.

University spokesman Michael R. Porter confirmed that VCU and Wilder are discussing the proposed museum. He says no formal action or preparations has occurred.

Porter says VCU plans to construct a new building for the medical school but that effort isn't funded. He says the project is the top capital priority for 2016.
