Salisbury's Riverwalk Undergoing Reconstruction

Posted:

SALISBURY, Md.- The Riverwalk in downtown Salisbury is getting a makeover.

Reconstruction on one of three sections started last week. Crews were busy digging up crumbled concrete early Thursday morning on the portion closest to Rt.13. Rick Tilghman works close by and is happy about what is to come.

"If you've ever been down here, you can see there was a lot of unevenness of the pavement," Tilghman said. "They would shave it and try to fix it over the years."

However, those improvements were not solving the issue. City Council President Jake Day tells WBOC the tie beams, used to hold the bulkheading in place, have been rotting underground. To make matters worse, settled concrete caused the surface in some areas to become uneven, causing people to trip over them.

"There were some pretty big gaps you'd see once in a while," Tilghman said.

The project is $1.5 million. Day said a bond will be used to cover the cost. The work will be split into three sections. The sidewalks will be dug up, replaced with poured-in concrete and then stamped with boardwalk-like designs. Handrails will be refurbished.

"Not only is it going to fix the unevenness, but I think it's going to make it look a lot better," Tilghman added.

Day said the project will be complete by the end of next summer.
