Nanticoke Tribe Remembers Former Chief Kenneth Clark

Posted: Updated:

MILLSBORO, Del. – An American flag flies at half-staff outside the Nanticoke Indian Museum for Kenneth “Red Deer” Clark, the tribes former chief of more than 30 years. Clark passed away on Fri. Oct. 9 at his home in Riverdale. He was 84.

Inside the museum, Clark’s memory lives on, on the walls and in the mind and heart of “Morningstar”, the woman who works in the museum Clark started years ago.

“He was just a well-rounded person that was quiet and never boisterous.”

The Navy veteran’s achievements are many but his most notable one came when he battled the state of Delaware over native-american remains being put on display after archaeologists dug them up on Island Field in Kent County. Clark won and the remains were re-interred.

As chief of the Nanticoke Indians, he brought back the tribe’s pow-wows, helped establish a senior center and built the museum.

Leading the tribe was in his blood. His father was chief before him and before both, his grandfather helped re-organized the group as The Nanticoke Indian Association in 1881.

A viewing for Chief Kenneth “Red Deer” Clark will be held Sat. Oct. 17 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Sun. Oct. 18 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m at The Watson Funeral Home in Millsboro. Clark will receive full military honors at a memorial service that follows.
