WILMINGTON, Del. (AP)- A fundraiser supporting Delaware Congressman John Carney's 2016 race for state governor was held in Wilmington. Carney raked in more than $200,000 at Monday's event at the Hotel du Pont. Delawareans can give $1,200 each election cycle to statewide political candidates. The fundraiser was hosted by that state's leading Democrats, including Gov. Jack Markell and Attorney General Matt Denn, who was unable to attend the event. Delaware's Democratic U.S. senators, Tom Carper and Chris Coons, also attended the fundraiser as special guests. In a statement, Carney said the "response I've received since my announcement has been overwhelming. I'm extremely grateful for all the support." On the Republican side, Carney faces Delaware Sen. Colin Bonini and political newcomer Lacey Lafferty in next year's gubernatorial race.
