Groups Seeking Comprehensive US Review of Pipelines

RICHMOND, Va. (AP)- Activists are asking federal regulators to view as a whole separate pipeline proposals by energy companies to deliver natural gas from drill fields to Virginia and beyond.
In a teleconference Monday, representatives of the groups called on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to consolidate four pipeline proposals into one to assess environmental impacts of the pipelines.
They argued that separate environmental reviews would be a piecemeal approach.
Since September, energy companies have formally filed proposals with FERC to build 900 miles of pipeline from West Virginia and through Virginia. One would go into North Carolina.
The pipelines would deliver natural gas from the Marcellus and Utica shale deposits in Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.
Asked to respond to the proposal, FERC said it does not comment on pending matters.
