Delaware Residents Want Buzzards to Buzz Off

Posted: Updated:

FELTON, Del. (AP) - Some Kent County residents say it's time for the buzzards to buzz off.
Felton volunteer firefighters and Chimney Hill community members planned to gather Tuesday to let local turkey vultures know they're not welcome. Firefighters will shine high-intensity lights at the vultures while residents make noise to try to get them to leave.
Residents say large concentrations of buzzards have taken roost in the area over the past year, causing property damage with their sharp nails and beaks. The vultures, a federally protected species that can't be harmed without a permit, also have highly acidic stomach liquids and urine and regurgitate a foul-smelling, corrosive vomit as a natural defense.
Residents also worry that communal roosts, like the one established in Chimney Hill, can be used for successive generations of vultures.
