USDA Grants Awarded to Three Sussex County Communities

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON, Del. – Three Sussex County communities were awarded almost $5.3 million in federal grants and loans from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

According to Delaware’s Congressional Delegation, Delmar, Georgetown and Lewes will all receive assistance from the USDA’s Rural Development, Community Facilities grant program.

The bulk of the money, a $5.05 million loan, was given to the Connections Community Support Program to open a Withdrawal Management Center serving Kent and Sussex Counties. The loan will cover the purchase of an existing facility and upgrade the services provided to include medical, substance abuse and psychiatric treatment.

The Town of Delmar, Delaware was given $50,000 to purchase portable radios and to upgrade existing ones for its police department. The radios will provide better communication with the State Police and State Emergency Communications systems in Delaware and Maryland, according to the Congressional Delegation.

Georgetown Fire Company also received $25,000 to buy portable radios for its volunteer firefighters, and the Lewes Public Library was awarded 450,000 to furnish the library.

In a separate announcement from the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market was given a $99,299.99 grant to expand access to produce from local farms and to pinpoint practices to improve farmers markets across the United States.
