Court Docs Shed New Light on Double Murder

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. (WBOC) - Court documents are revealing new details in a recent double murder near Dover.

Clifton Leager, 52, and Haley Henwood, 18, were shot and killed during a home invasion in the Rodney Village neighborhood on Oct. 17.

Two men were arrested within a week - Matthew Harrington, 23, and Saleem Shabazz, 21, both of Philadelphia, were caught in Pennsylvania. The men needed to be extradited back to Delaware to face charges. For Shabazz that happened Tuesday.

He's now held without bond at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington. He's charged with a litany of crimes, including first-degree murder. His charging documents lay out a big part of what police think happened the night of the double murder.

Court docs say state troopers found a man - identified in news releases as Leager - shot in the torso at the back door of his home on John Clark Road. He died there. Troopers say they found items tossed all over the place, which indicated a struggle.

A witness told police she had seen a man in a ski mask ask where the "stuff was." The docs say another person involved told investigators he'd had a falling out with Shabazz over a drug deal in April 2014. The same person identified Shabazz and said during the incident he told Shabazz "There's nothing here, bro."

What's not in the charging documents is anything about Henwood, the other victim, nothing about who shot her, where, or why.

Police told WBOC she traveled with the suspects to Dover. A neighbor showed WBOC the spot in his yard where police found her.

The second suspect, Harrington, has still not been extradited. So, there is no probable cause affidavit outlining his involvement in the shootings available to the public yet.

The court documents also say there was surveillance video of the suspects at a nearby Rite Aid pharmacy buying and shoplifting items.
