DELMAR, Del.– A heroin-addiction support group will be lighting candles and walking in solidarity Wednesday night in Delmar.

“Shoulder to Shoulder to Beat Heroin Addiction" will meet at 6:30 p.m. to hold its first annual Delmar Candlelight Vigil, to be held at the historic caboose on North Pennsylvania Avenue.

Various speakers will address the group, including Delmar town officials, family-members and recovering addicts.

Penny Glasgow, co-founder of Shoulder to Shoulder, said the main hope of Wednesday night’s gathering is to continue working to remove the stigma of heroin addiction and to keep the conversation going about what she says is a serious problem in her community.

"I want them to know that it can happen to you.” Penny said. “Don't ever say 'not my kid, not my town, not my county."

“Shoulder to Shoulder” is a relatively new group, established about six months ago. On Facebook, the group has roughly 200 members.

At Wednesday night's event, the group will light three types of candles: a white one for those in recovery, a red one for those still in active addiction, and a black one for those who have died as a result of heroin.
