Update: Somerset County Teacher Killed in Weekend Crash

Posted: Updated:

FRUITLAND, Md.- A Somerset County special education teacher was killed Sunday afternoon, in a two-car crash in Fruitland. Four others were injured, according to police.

Fruitland police said the incident happened shortly before 6 p.m. at the intersection of Route 13 and Main Street. According to police, all five occupants of the two vehicles were transported to Peninsula Regional Medical Center, with injuries ranging from minor to life-threatening.

Police said one of the victims, identified as 48-year-old Angela Brinkley of Westover, Md., was unable to be revived and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

A spokesman for Somerset County Public Schools said Brinkley was a special education teacher at Washington Academy and High School. She worked in the school system for 12 years, starting in August of 2003. The spokesman said the principal alerted faculty and staff through an automated message Sunday night, and then met with everyone, including the students, Monday morning. Counselors will be available all week to those in the school that need to talk, the spokesman said.

The Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office's Crash Reconstruction Unit responded to assist. Portions of Route 13 and Main Street remained closed for several hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

Police said neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to be a factor at this time. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
