More Job Cuts in Wicomico County

SALISBURY, Md.- Voltronics, an electronics manufacturer is eliminating 26 jobs at its Salisbury location. These cuts come months after Labinal, another Salisbury based business cut more than 500 jobs in January 2015.

Donna Richardson, Branch Manager at Express Employment said recent job losses have increased the need for staffing services. Richardson said, " Recently, in the last year or so we've seen a lot of layoffs and companies closing in the manufacturing sector; so we've had people coming to us who have long tenure, good work history, good skills that don't always transition into another position right away."

Maryland's October unemployment rate is 5.1 percent, but the unemployment rates for all three lower Eastern Shore Counties are higher, according to the Maryland Department of Labor. Salisbury's newly elected Mayor, Jake Day said, " It's better Maryland wide and that's because the Baltimore, Washington corridor is buffered from some of those losses; federal jobs and federal contractors. Here on the Eastern Shore, we experience the pain; 10.1 percent unemployment in Wicomico County, it was painful, but we've bounced back and it's still declining. Wicomico County is at 5.9 percent, according to the Maryland Labor Department's September 2015 report.

According to Mayor Day, there is some good news for the people at Voltronics; the people from the 26 jobs being eliminated will be moved into other positions at K&L Microwave, a sister company. Voltronics said they will eliminate the 26 jobs in Salisbury by September 2016.
