MILFORD, Del. - The community is coming together to help the staff of Abbot's Grill prepare for the annual Thanksgiving buffet after a shed fire destroyed most of the banquet items needed for the event.

Around 1 am Friday, firefighters responded to a fire at the restaurant on Front St.

The fire killed the buildings electricity, and completely burned the shed behind the restaurant. Officials said a cigarette could be what caused the blaze, and damages are estimated around $10,000.

The fire destroyed banquet tables and chairs inside the shed, and owner Kevin Reading said at first there was concern for the holiday buffet.

"We have over 600 reservations for Thanksgiving and so I'm thinking of all these people like oh my God," he said. "Not just the people coming in there but all our employees, what are we going to do?"

Executive chef Paul Gallow showed up for work Friday morning to a similar feeling.

"I was completely shocked, they had been trying to get ahold of me last night since like 2:30 but I was asleep and did not have my phone on,"  he explained. "It was definitely shocking, I kind of felt like my house caught on fire."

But it's not all a loss, the Milford Senior center is donating replacements to the charred chairs and toasted tables, so Thanksgiving is still a go.

"Anytime you have something like that happen there is a there is a void, there's a loss of momentum, there's a trickle down theory across the board,"
Reading said. "But in this case I think we've dodged a big bullet we can rest assured we'll be here Thursday... I feel very fortunate and very blessed with being in the community of Milford and everyone is coming to our rescue."

Abbott's Grill is set to reopen Saturday around 3 pm for dinner.

A more thorough investigation is still underway.
