WEST OCEAN CITY, Md.- Santa House is back in business for the holiday season and could use your help through donations.
We did not catch any elves in Santa's workshop Monday morning, but there was plenty of evidence that nearly 100 volunteers with the non-profit Santa House have been busy.
The non-profit, which collects and distributes toys, food and clothing donations to families in need throughout Worcester County, is operating out of an annex building that belongs to Atlantic General Hospital. The location is only available through January. Then, the organization has to find a new home for next year.
Despite the looming challenge, Santa House helpers are staying focused. More than 100 bags have been packed and ready to go for families across the area. Volunteers will start distributing bags Dec.15.
Dena Holloway, who is president of the non-profit, expects the donations they have now to dwindle quickly.
"There's a great need in Worcester County, more than I every thought it was going to be," Holloway said.
Last year, the organization served more than 500 families in the county. At least 50 families received assistance in Ocean City. Any given year, Holloway said more than 2,000 children are served.
"I just can't tell you what it's like to know that there are families out there that don't even have a blanket to keep them warm or a coat for a child," said Holloway, who expressed how heart-wrenching it can be.
She said clothing is always in high demand.
Each year businesses and local agencies like the Ocean City Police Department collect donations for the non-profit.
OCPD is asking the community to drop off unwrapped toys. Other drop off locations include: any Calvin Taylor Bank, Family Chiropractic Care, Hertrich of Pocomoke, Ocean Lanes Bowling Alley, Ocean Pines Library, Ocean Pines Park & Rec., Poultry Supply, Power House Gym and Eddie Bauer - White Marlin Mall.
"I realize everybody is probably in a tight situation, but if they could just reach out and help provide just one glove, a pair of shoes, even a little bit of clothing and some toys for the kids in Worcester County that just need a little bit more," said Holloway. No donation is too small.
Monetary donations should go directly to the non-profit. You can mail your contribution to the Santa House, Inc. at P.O. Box 14 in Snow Hill, MD 21863.
