TANGIER ISLAND, Va. - Smith Island and Tangier Island have received some high praise being named a destination in National Geographic Traveler edition's Top 20 Must-See places in the world in 2016.

The two islands are listed among places like New York City, the Philippines, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.  WBOC visited Tangier Island to find out why islanders believe they made the list.

On Tangier, things are just slower.  No cars, no traffic, no rush to life.  And that is just how people there like it.

"It's safe.  This is like Mayberry, The Waltons, Little House on the Prairie wrapped up in one and it's just a safe place to live," said Carol Moore who has lived her whole life on the island.

It's that slow way of life that have gained the islands notoriety on Delmarva but it is now bringing them even more attention.  Being named in the top 20 list has become a big deal on Smith and Tangier.  It was a hot topic of conversation on Tangier all day on Wednesday.  And while receiving the attention is a great honor, it's what the attention could bring - like more tourism dollars - that is particularly exciting for islanders.  Once those tourists arrive, many believe they will never want to leave.

"I have had several of my friends come here and wish they lived here.  Because this way of life, I don't care how much money you have, you can't buy it," said Cindy Wheatley of Tangier.

Islanders are confident that experiencing their way of life is something people won't see anywhere else in the world.
