PITTSVILLE, Md. - The trial for Carla Moore, the former employee of the town of Pittsville accused of embezzling thousands of dollars, will continue on Friday. The bench trial got under way on Tuesday but witness testimony went long and forced the trial to extend into another day.

Moore is accused of embezzling more than $170,000 from the town of Pittsville over a year long span while she worked in the town office.  Moore waived her right to a trial by jury on Tuesday morning.

The 24-year-old was arrested back in May of this year after a lengthy investigation.  According to testimony in court on Tuesday, Moore was hired in 2009 to help with duties of the town clerk.  By 2011, according to testimony, Moore was involved with financial roles in the office, including bookkeeping and payroll for town employees.

According to investigators, a problem was noticed during an annual audit of the town when numerous transactions were found to be unrelated to the day-to-day operations of typical town business.  Moore was fired from her position in 2013.

In court on Tuesday, Pittsville town commissioners were asked if they ever allowed Carla Moore to make personal car or credit card payments with town money. The commissioners were also asked if they ever authorized the town to loan Moore money.  All of the commissioners, including the president of the commission and Carla Moore's father, Denver Moore, said the town never authorized such loans or payments.

Moore faces five counts of felonious theft.  Her trial is scheduled to resume Friday morning.

Watch: Former Cape May Ferry Sunk for Use as Artificial Reef

On Friday, a former Cape May-Lewes ferry was sunk to become part of Delaware’s artificial reef system. The Twin Capes joined the Del-Jersey-Land reef’s submerged fleet that includes the ex-destroyer USS Arthur W. Radford, which went down in 2011 as the longest ship reefed on the East Coast, and the Zuni/Tamaroa, a Battle of Iwo Jima survivor turned US Coast Guard cutter that plied Atlantic waters for nearly 50 years.
