SALISBURY, Md.- An animal donation drive is under way at Salisbury University to help shelters in Wicomico, Worcester and Dorchester counties.

Oftentimes, when people think about the homeless population on Delmarva, humans come to mind. But this holiday season, people are urged to think about helpless animals that do not have a forever home.

"We can for the most part provide for ourselves, but those animals can't do it," said Samantha Esham, who hopes people will help fulfill their needs. SU is giving students, staff and the community an opportunity to help.

A donation drive for animals recently started in the Blackwell Library. It is called, "Be a Hero for Homeless Animals." You will find four boxes in the collection center by the circulation desk. Organizers said donations have been slow coming in.

The initiative helps The Humane Society of Wicomico County, The Worcester County Humane Society and the Baywater Animal Rescue in Cambridge.

Each shelter has a wish-list. You can also find the lists in the collection center.

Some of the items needed include: dog and cat food, pet soap, kitty litter, shampoo, collars and leashes, nail clippers, brushes, newspapers, new or used towels and blankets.

The donation drive ends Dec. 18.
