SHARPTOWN, Md. - A 16-month-old girl, sent to the hospital following a child abuse case in Shaprtown, Md., died Friday, according to the Wicomico County State's Attorney's Office.

The Wicomico County Child Advocacy Center said Thursday that 25-year-old Darren Lee Adkins was arrested Wednesday in connection to the abuse of the little girl. Officials said Adkins lived with the child's mother.

Wicomico County State's Attorney's Office Matt Maciarello said Friday that on December 1, the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office responded to a home on Little Water Street in Sharptown for a report of an unresponsive 16-month-old child. Maciarello said the little girl was taken to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury but was later transported to Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Maciarello said the girl was pronounced dead on Friday.

Adkins was ordered to be held without bond after being charged with first- and second-degree child abuse and first- and second-degree assault.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 28.
