Grants Awarded to Help Virginians Reduce Dependency on Aid

Posted:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP)- More than a dozen Virginia localities are receiving federal grants to help low-income residents become self-sufficient.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded the funding to help public housing residents and families who receive federal housing vouchers. The goal is to reduce residents' dependence on welfare and rental subsidies.

U.S. Senators Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine announced the grants on Monday in a news release.

Warner says the grants will be used to provide job training, educational opportunities and counseling. Kaine says the grants will give residents an opportunity to increase their income.

Localities receiving grants include Alexandria, Bristol, Chesapeake, Danville, Fairfax County, Hampton, Harrisonburg, Hopewell, Loudoun County, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Richmond, Roanoke, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, Waynesboro and Prince William County.
