CRISFIELD, Md.- 'Tis the season for handing out cheer and parking citations in Crisfield. The Crisfield Police Department is on a mission this holiday season: officers are handing out as many parking citations as they can.

Chief Michael Tabor said he doesn't want people to be alarmed if they receive a citation; it is the department's way of saying happy holidays.

"It's kind of a ruse, we've been placing a lot of them on cars," Tabor said. "Basically it just says, 'Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from the Crisfield Police Department.'"

Roger Tull received one of the parking citations while he was parked downtown in Crisfield.

"I was wondering if I had done something wrong," Tull said when the officer approached him. He said after reading the citation and realizing it wasn't a fine, he was happy.

Tabor said the department has handed out over 500 holiday citations and plans to hand out even more over the new few weeks.

The department will also be hosting Santa Claus at the Crisfield police station on Wednesday. He will be handing out toys, coats and hats to children from 6-8 p.mp.m.

Space Heater Safety Urged as Temperatures Plummet

With temperatures expected to drop in the coming weeks, fire safety officials are urging people who use space heaters to warm up rooms or homes to be careful in where and when they use the devices.

Dover Assistant Fire Chief Chris Jacobs said there does tend to be an increased number of space heater fires once it becomes much colder. Those incidents, he said, are often caused by people who place heaters near combustible materials or leave them unattended while still on.
