TYASKIN, Md. – State fire officials are investigating a fire they say was set intentionally at a church in western Wicomico County.

According to the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal, the investigation began when a passerby noticed damage to the wall of the St. Mary’s Episcopal Church on Nanticoke Road in Tyaskin at around 7 a.m. Wednesday.

Investigators determined that someone had deliberately poured an accelerant on the vinyl-sided exterior wall of the church, before lighting it on fire. Fire officials said the fire caused scorching and some melting of the siding materials before it went out by itself.

The damage was estimated at around $1,200.

Anyone who has information about the fire including who might have started it should call the Lower Eastern Regional Office of the State Fire Marshal at (410) 713-3783 or the Arson Hotline at 1-800-492- 7529.
