Record-Setting Warmth for Christmas Eve Day on Delmarva

DOVER, Del. (WBOC) - Last minute shoppers were walking in a wet and warm winter wonderland Thursday as Delmarva got record setting temperatures for Christmas Eve Day.

The thermometer hit 70 degrees in Delaware.

All over downtown Dover there were people in shorts, including James Fritsch.

"I got up this morning, and it was a little blustery. But it was like 70 degrees, so I put on my shorts," he said. "I wanted to go play golf, but it got a little rainy on us. So, we couldn't play golf."

Joy Truitt wasn't wearing shorts. But she was in a tank top. Truitt says despite the warmth it still feels like Christmas.

"I think it does to me. It's not about the weather. It's about the traditions. Everything we do we've done this year. It's just been a little nicer," said Truitt.

In Rehoboth Tanger Outlets was also crowded with last minute shoppers.

"I'm traditionally a last minute Christmas Eve shopper," said Laurie Shifflett. "I think this is the first time I've ever done it with no jacket on."

It was warm at the outlets. But it was also raining pretty hard at times throughout the day.

"The snow is beautiful. But for practical purposes, today I prefer the rain," Shifflett said.

"There's something wrong," said Sarah Bennett, who was out shopping. "It should be snowing not raining. It's just plain weird."

With raindrops instead of snowflakes falling, people are only able to do as the old song says and dream of a white Christmas.
