WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. - A proposed rental development to built on the west side of Salisbury has not received support from the state of Maryland and will not be moving forward.

The Pirhl development company wanted to build a 64 home subdivision in the wooded area behind the Wesley Temple church on West Road.  The church, along with a majority of the homes in that community, are not inside Salisbury city limits.  However, the wooded area is privately-owned land that had been annexed into the city.  The homes in the subdivision would have been rental homes for at least the first 15 years and rent would start as low as just a few hundred dollars a month.

The plan to build a rental community in the middle of a owner-occupied neighborhood had some of those homeowners upset.

"Well, I said 'Lord, it's time for me to get away from here.'  Because I got a development in the front of me that I had to deal with and I didn't know how it would be to deal with one in the back of me," said Aline Ennis, who would have had the development built on the land directly behind her property.  Ennis said she worried a rental development would lower the property values in the neighborhood.

Other worried about the possible ramifications that a rental community would bring to their neighborhood.

"Rental people are a lot of transient people.  And then when you get a lot of transient people, a lot times it is associated with crime and ill will," said Bill Dennis.

However, the worrying for many of the neighbors has ended.  Salisbury Mayor Jake Day told WBOC the developer was waiting to hear back from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development for tax credits for the project.  Day said the department has decided to not give it's support to the proposed development.  Welcomed new with Ennis.

"I feel great because it is not going to happen."
