MILLVILLE, Del.- The Millville Fire Department is proposing a required ambulance subscription service to help pay for more 24-hour emergency crews.

Currently, the department has two paid crews of two who work 7 a.m.-7 p.m. However, there is only one crew that works 24 hours.

That means, if a second accident occurs, volunteers are called in, which adds several minutes to a potentially life-threatening response.

According to Millville FD's spokesman Bob Powell, making ambulance insurance required would help fund an additional crew.

Residents have the option of a $50 subscription now, that would cover whatever their personal insurance does not if they need an ambulance.

The proposal, also known as a "community-wide discount ambulance subscription service," would be required, and only be $35.

Powell said ambulance rides have increased by 500 annually since 2012.

"There's no more small Millville, or Ocean View," Powell explained. "It's a big area now and we have to expand our part to take care of all the individuals who we represent."

But of course, the idea of a so-called tax might ruffle some feathers.

Pam Stanton said she sees pros and cons.

"I believe that it's a two-sided sword," she said. "You have people that already pay their insurance, and I feel there's no need for me to pay another $35. However, the $35 is not a lot of money to pay so that we can always get ambulance service if we need it."

"I would say this could probably be some of the best $35 you could spend," Powell added. "To help you save yourself, or someone that you dearly love."

The Millville FD covers Millville and Ocean View. The proposal will be discussed at the Ocean View Town Council meeting on Jan. 12 and at a Millville town work session on Jan. 26.
