GREENWOOD, Del.- Authorities have ruled as accidental a late Sunday afternoon poultry house fire in Greenwood that left 21,000 chickens dead.

Investigators with the Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office said the blaze broke out shortly after 5 p.m. at the property located on the 13000 block of Hunters Cove Road.

Firefighters from the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Company, assisted by the Ellendale, and Bridgeville volunteer fire companies, responded to the scene to find heavy fire showing from the structure, according to investigators.

Investigators determined an electrical malfunction sparked the blaze. Total damages were estimated at $500,000.

The property owner was not home at the time of the fire and there were no reported injuries, authorities said.
