SALISBURY, Md.- Known for years as the "Booth Street Projects," a Salisbury public housing complex is getting a much needed makeover.

On Monday, phase one of the $17 million project began as crews started tearing down 50 of the current 100 low-income apartments to make room for "Booth Street Townhouses." The property will be converted into two phases, with 84 affordable units in each phase. This brings a total of 168 new homes.

The current apartments are well over 30-years-old and many neighbors are glad to see a change.

"I think it's a brilliant idea," said Tracey Bryant. "These apartments have been up for a while now, and I think it's about time that they did something.  They relocated a couple of people just to get started on the area, but I think it's a brilliant idea, I really do."

The company responsible for building the project, Pennrose Corp., which is out of Baltimore, tells WBOC it hopes to begin construction on phase one in spring of 2016.
