OCEAN CITY, Md. - A fire at an Ocean City condominium building late Wednesday morning began in the bed of a pickup truck as first believed, investigators said Thursday.

The Ocean City Fire Marshal's Office determined the fire started on the ground floor of the Pelican Beach Condominium in the area of a running generator located in the bed of a pickup truck. In a press release, investigators said the fire quickly engulfed the vehicle and then spread to the ceiling of the parking garage, where it was fueled by the combustible spray-on insulation and strong winds. The fire then traveled up the east side of the building, fueled by the exterior finishes and balcony furniture, but entered only one unit.

As for the damage, Ocean City Fire Marshal David Hartley said only part of the building was badly burned.

“The interior of one unit experienced significant fire damage, as well as the building’s east side exterior balconies,” he said. “Damage to the remaining units consisted of heat and smoke, however; the underground parking area, which was the only portion of the building protected by a fire sprinkler system, was unaffected by the fire.”

The five-story building, located on 140th Street, was unoccupied at the time of the fire. The fire department says the 28-unit building has been posted "no occupancy" as a result of the damage.
