SALISBURY, Md. - With the impending winter storm approaching Delmarva, Delmarva Power is hoping for the best but preparing for the worst this weekend in regards to power outages.

The storm is forecast to bring wet snow along with high winds to Delmarva.  This type of storm can mean power outages for Delmarva Power customers throughout the weekend.

"That does typically create problems with the coating of the power lines.  It weighs down the power lines.  It could cause trees to topple on the power lines," said Delmarva Power spokesperson Matt Likovich.

Throughout the weekend, the utility company has crews on standby 24 hours a day and has overhead line contractors and tree crews available to help out as well.  However, powerful storms can create the need to for extra help restoring power quickly to large outages.  In these situations, Delmarva Power set up mutual assistance with other power companies.  But with this particular storm, any help may be coming from farther away than normal.

"This storm is pretty much going to hit this region in a widespread area so any mutual assistance we get would have to come from companies that are pretty far away but we make phone calls as necessary and would get any extra help as need be," Likovich said.

Also, there is the possibility Delmarva Power could be called upon to send help across the bay to regions in need.

"As far as us helping any other region, we will take care of out situation here on the peninsula first," said Likovich.  "We will make sure we have everything under control before we would release any other crews to any other areas to help out."

Delmarva Power is urging customers to have a emergency storm kit ready for this storm.  The kit should have items including a battery-powered radio, first-aid kit, and any necessary medications just in case of long power outages this weekend because of the storm.
