Posted: Updated:

DELMAR, Del.- Delaware State Police are investigating a crash that killed a Salisbury, Md. man Tuesday afternoon.

Police said that just after noon, 65-year-old Alfred C. Gilmore was driving northbound on Old Stage Road in Delmar when for unknown reasons he failed to stop at the stop sign at Whitesville Road. According to troopers, his van then entered the intersection in front of an eastbound car, operated by 55-year-old Robert Malaby, also of Salisbury. Police said the front of Malaby's car hit the driver's side of the van, causing both vehicles to roll onto their sides before coming to rest.

According to police, Gilmore, who was properly restrained at the time, was taken to Peninsula Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Malaby was also properly restrained and was uninjured, police said.

Whitesville and Old Stage roads in the area of the intersection were closed for approximately three hours following the crash.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but police do not believe alcohol to be a factor.

Witnesses are asked to contact Master Cpl. Jay Burns at (302) 703-3266. Information may also be provided by calling Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333, via the internet at www.tipsubmit.com, or by sending an anonymous tip by text to 274637 (CRIMES) using the keyword "DSP."
