Suspicious Vehicle Prompts Milford School District Warning

Posted: Updated:

MILFORD, Del.- Milford School District officials are advising students and parents to be on the alert for suspicious vehicles after an unknown man in a van reportedly approached a Milford Central Academy student at a bus stop and offered to take her to school.

According to MSD Superintendent Phylis Kohel, the incident happened on Wednesday morning. Kohel said the student stated that she was waiting for the bus when a man in a white van pulled up and offered to give her a ride to school. The student declined the offer and told the man she was waiting for the bus, Kohel said. The man repeated the offer and the student again declined at which time the man drove away, according to Kohel.

Kohel said the incident was alarming to the student and her parents, who contacted the Milford Police Department's school resource officer, who then contacted Delaware State Police to assist in the investigation. An alert was also sent out to parents in the Milford School District about the incident, Kohel said.

School officials also did a full accounting of all students Wednesday, Kohel said.

"We called all parents of students who were absent to make sure they were accounted for and they were," said Kohel, who added that there were no other incidents that day.

Delaware State Police Master Cpl. Gary Fournier said the incident, which occurred in the Lincoln area at around 8 a.m., was investigated by troopers who searched the area for a white van but did not locate any matching its description.

Kohel is reminding students and parents to be watchful of their surroundings.

"We're warning our parents to be aware of any suspicious vehicles they might see and to have that conversation with their children about not taking rides from strangers," Kohel said.
