SALISBURY, Md.- Wor-Wic Community College President Ray Hoy presented a proposal to the Wicomico County Council on Tuesday to implement a scholarship that would assist Wicomico County students with free tuition.
"Wicomico County is trailing the state in the percent of population with a college degree," Hoy said. "If we want to be competitive for businesses and if we want to make our own businesses more competitive, we need to raise the level of education of our community, so this helps to address that."
According to Hoy, Wicomico County had only 35 percent of working age people between the age of 25-65 with an associates degree or higher in 2013; compared with the state average of 46 percent.
Hoy said students applying for the scholarship would first have to apply for all eligible financial aid, then the economic impact scholarship would cover the remaining balance of tuition and fees. The scholarship would not cover the cost of books and supplies.
Wicomico County Executive Bob Culver will include this proposed scholarship in his 2016 budget presentation.
