Va. House OKs Bill Letting Guard Members Carry Guns

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP)- Virginia's GOP-controlled House has approved a bill that would allow members of the National Guard to carry concealed handguns while on duty.

The bill would allow National Guard members with a valid permit to carry concealed handguns at guard facilities, like recruiting centers. Commanding officers would still be allowed to prohibit guard members from carrying guns in certain situations, like training exercises.

Republican Del. Scott Taylor introduced his bill in response to last year's deadly shooting a military recruiting center in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The House unanimously approved the bill on Thursday. It now heads to the GOP-controlled Senate.
