Va. Bills Moving Forward Would Allow Minor Offenses to be Erased

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP)- A bill that's getting bipartisan support in the Virginia General Assembly would allow people who had minor alcohol or marijuana possession offenses when they were under the age of 21 to have their records expunged.

Under Republican Sen. Ryan McDougle's bill, offenders would have to wait five years after serving their sentence before asking the court to erase their record.

McDougle says that's vital to ensure people who made a mistake can remain a "significant part of our society and workforce."

McDougle's bill was overwhelmingly approved by a Senate committee this week and heads to the full chamber.

The committee also backed a bill that would do away with the six-month driver's license suspension for simple possession of marijuana that results in a misdemeanor conviction.
