NORTHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. - Virginia State Police have launched a homicide investigation following a suspicious fire that led to the discovery of an elderly woman's body at a home in Exmore on the Eastern Shore.

At approximately 4 a.m. on Jan. 27, the Exmore Fire Department responded to a trailer that was engulfed in flames at the 7200 block of Occohannock Neck Road. The sole occupant of the trailer, Shirley Onley, 70, was found dead at the scene, according to police.

Onley's body was sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Norfolk for examination and autopsy, where it was determined that her death was a homicide, police said.

Anyone with information about the fire and Onley's death is asked to call the Virginia State Police at 757-424-6800 or email questions@vsp.virginia.gov. The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Chesapeake Field Office is investigating the incident.
