OCEAN CITY, Md. - An Ocean City man has been charged with burglary after police say he was living in someone else's unoccupied home.

According to police, the owner of a property on 17th Street first noticed in early January that the home's utility bills were higher in recent months even though no one was living there. When the owner checked on the home, police say 59-year-old Howard Shaffer of Ocean City had been living there.

Shaffer was located by Maryland State Police on Feb. 2 and arrested by Ocean City Police. Officers say he was charged with multiple counts of burglary, theft and malicious destruction of property.

Police say Shaffer was seen by a Maryland district court commissioner and released after posting $15,000 bond.
